To deliver our strategy we will seek to secure life-long partnerships with individuals, groups, communities, companies, and other organisations that feel as fiercely passionate about the preservation of this wilderness as we do here at The Lake District Protection Project.

Our Inspiration

The inspiration for setting up The Lake District Protection Project has been the great English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist, Beatrix Potter. Many are surprised to hear that Beatrix was a great entrepreneur who loved the natural world and felt uncomfortable with urban life and culture. After many visits to the Lake District as a child, Beatrix decided to use the money from the sale of her early books to buy her first farm – ‘Hill Top’ based in Near Sawrey, near Hawkshead, in 1905.

Beatrix was the de facto estate manager for the Trust for seven years; she observed key issues in the Lake District and worked to address may with afforestation and preservation of intact grazing lands, quarries, and timber on the farms. When Beatrix died in 1943, she left 17 farms, eight cottages, over 4,000 acres of land, her flocks of Herdwick sheep, and hard copies of her books to the National Trust.

We hope you can see why Beatrix Potter has been our inspiration for setting up the Lake District Protection Project and to continue her incredible work.

Our Mission — Purchase to Protect

The Lake District Protection Project exists to safeguard the natural beauty, biodiversity and ecological heritage of the Lake District for generations to come.

Through our Purchase to Protect initiative, we seek to acquire environmentally significant and vulnerable land throughout the Lake District and place it under long-term conservation stewardship, protecting it from development, degradation and the loss of precious natural habitats.

Our ambition extends beyond preservation. We aim to restore damaged ecosystems, encourage the regeneration of native woodlands and temperate rainforests, create thriving habitats for native wildlife and allow nature the space and freedom to recover.

We believe that the most powerful way to protect our natural world is to take meaningful, lasting action today.

By bringing together individuals, businesses, philanthropists and organisations who share our vision, we aim to build a growing legacy of protected landscapes, where every donation contributes towards securing a piece of the Lake District’s natural heritage.
